In the whole world only two countries produce woven bags using jali - jali materials. The first is Mexico with name Mexican Bags and the second is Indonesia with name Jali - jali Bags. Both countries use the same type of raw materials although different widths. The Mexican Bags use jali - jali materials width 6 mm and The Jali - jali bags from Indonesia use jali - jali materials width 9 mm, and now we will only write about the history of the Jali - jali Bags in Indonesia.
Jali - jali materials in Indonesia have been arround for long time, more than 30 years ago the Jali - jali materials were used by Indonesians to make wickers on a set of table chairs, and began to be abandoned since the advent of sintetic rattan as a new materials for weaving table chairs that are considered more modern. And since then sales of jali - jali materials have dropped dramatically. And more than fifteen years ago, the materials which is considered unsold is used to make woven bags by creative hands, but short handle design. And when the sale not like now, can be categorized as unsold product. Because at that time only used by mothers limited to shopping for vegetables to the tradtional market. In Indonesia, Jali - jali Bags only produced in Java Island especially in Ponorogo, East Java.
At that time, the sale of Jali - jali Bags short handle design did not sell well like today, because only marketed offline in traditional markets and even then only limeted to East Java, like Blitar city , Ponorogo city , Trenggalek city, Tulungagung city and Malang city. And all city names are cities in East Java not in other regions. And that goes on for decades. The causes of the stagnation in the sale of jali - jali bags is because they are only sold offline and only marketed in traditional markets in East Java, so...that the segment market is also limeted.
Cahaya Hafidza & Brothers was originally a shop in Ponorogo , East Java which only sells woven bag materials, the majority of consumers are woven bag craftsmen. After 1 years selling only raw materials, in the end, many craftsmen started offering us woven product ( Ponorogo Bags / Ponorogo HandMade) to us. And that's when we officially started selling handycraft products, especially Ponorogo woven bags.
The caracteristics of weaving from Ponorogo is using perpendicular webbing techniques like ponorogo bags and jali - jali bags. And at that time we saw the potential sales of the Jali - jali bags, and we tried to sell the product in a more modern way to expand the market and consumer reach which aims to help local craftsmen to increase income. And that's when we are started to sell jali - jali bags by online with the hope of reaching wider consumers.
Ater the market demand for jali - jali bags began to increase, we got the next problem, because the factory that usually supplies the jali - jali materials in Ponorogo are only able to supply a limited amount because they are a home industry with a small capacity, not a large factory. We had felt hopeless and want to stop selling the jali - jali bags because it is not balanced between consumers demand with a limited amount of production because inadequate materials supply. And we are decided to limiting the number of consumer while continuing to think about solutions. At that time we refused many consumers. After more than two months, we finally found the solution. And now......we are really capable of serving consumers demand. Whatever amount they want, although still many shortcomings but we will always to improve in providing services.
